Water & Music, by Cherie Hu

About

Welcome to Water & Music, an email newsletter focused on unpacking big ideas in music and technology. The name comes from a 2015 HYPEBEAST interview between Quincy Jones and Kendrick Lamar, in which the former declares "The last things to leave...

...this planet will be water and music."

My writing philosophy revolves around breaking down borders, in all senses that word. Innovation in music has historically been challenged by geographic borders among audiences; opaque financial borders between artists and their labels and publishers; unnecessary organizational borders among internal and external business functions — the list goes on. Technology is enabling all those borders to crumble in real time, giving independent artists unprecedented leverage while making incumbent industry players reconsider their strategy and positioning in 2020 and beyond.

This newsletter is published once a week and will feature a mix original, exclusive essays and edited transcripts my podcast.
