This week around 8000 issues came in…
Though Hollywood's loss of Bob Saget and Sidney Poitier was clear, this week had a very broad set of emerging/increasing terms with very little "depth" in most themes. The "increased usage" terms, percentagewise, flattened back out as well, with most being in the 200% range; this means they went up, but none were crazy off-the-chart increases of stuff that everyone was talking about.
(Click on any of the terms to learn more about them and read newsletter issues they're in)
Newly Emerging Terms
- Saget... as in Bob Saget, American actor and comedian, who died unexpectedly this week (anyone out there reminiscing about the days of America's Funniest Home Videos?)
- Sherman... there are references to several Shermans, but the majority seem to be driven by mentions of U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, who was participating NATO-Russia talks
- MLK... as in Martin Luther King, Jr -- and MLK day is this coming Monday (17th) in the US
- Geneva... related to the location of some of the diplomatic discussions this week with Russia
- Ahmaud & Arbery... as in Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed black Georgian man who was murdered in 2020; his murderers were sentenced this week.
- Bronx... as in the horrifying Bronx fire that left 17 people dead :(
Biggest Increase in Usage from Previous Week
- justices (>250%)... related to the Supreme Court Justices, who this week blocked President Biden's Covid-19 vaccination-or-testing mandate for large business but allowed it to go forward to health care workers
- Poitier (>250%)... as in Sidney Poitier, the Bahamian-American actor, director, and eventually diplomat who passed away this week at 94. He was the first African-American and first Bahamian to win an Academy Award for best actor in 1964.
- perform (~200%)... fairly random, but definitely some mentions of Prince Andrew not being allowed to perform public duties, moms and dads having to "perform" multiple roles as schools are closed for Covid, artists that will perform in the near future, and more...
- insurers (~200%)... related to US health insurers who have been directed by the government to now cover the costs/reimburse people for at-home Covid tests
- Jerome (~200%)... mainly related to Jerome Powell, head of the Federal Reserve (he's the one that controls when the Fed will start raising interest rates...and he hasn't indicated when that will be yet.)
- detention (~200%)... used in a variety of contexts, such as detention centers in Australia, the high-ranking Syrian official found guilty of abuses at a detention center, etc
Most Used Terms
Covid is hanging on strong. Nothing else is too exciting or shifting about in this most-used set...
Note that these "Most Used" terms tend to be used very broadly, in lots of contexts... vs. the other "Emerging" and "Biggest Usage Increase" terms which are, as you can tell, quite narrow and likely more meaningful/interesting.
