This week over 7700 issues came in…
Without any doubt, the war in Ukraine is DOMINATING newly emerging terms, most increase in usage terms, and even the most common terms. Other than covid, it's the only other global event that we've seen affect the most commonly used words (normally we only see a seasonal/holiday impact, like around Christmas or New Years).
(Click on any of the terms to learn more about them and read newsletter issues they're in)
Newly Emerging Terms
- Ketanji... as in Ketanji Brown Jackson, who President Biden recently nominated for the Supreme Court
- Kiev... or Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine,
- airspace... many countries have restricted their airspace, not allowing Russian planes to enter
- CPAC... The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), an annual gathering of the right wing of American politics, gathered at the end of February
Biggest Increase in Usage from Previous Week
- Kharkiv (>450%)... The second largest city in Ukraine-- and it is currently being bombarded by Russia
- refugee (>450%) & fled (>350%) fleeing (>300) ... Over a million refugees have fled from Ukraine so far
- Zelenskyy (>300%)... as in Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy (also spelled Zelensky and Zelenskiy)
Most Used Terms
Covid stayed off the top set for the third week in a row, a downward trend in usage that's hopefully mirroring the plummeting global caseloads! And "love" hopped up there -- happy belated Valentine's Day everyone!
Note that these "Most Used" terms tend to be used very broadly, in lots of contexts... vs. the other "Emerging" and "Biggest Usage Increase" terms which are, as you can tell, quite narrow and likely more meaningful/interesting.
