This week over 7700 issues came in…
We're back to a broader mix of emergent and increased-in-usage terms this week, though many are still tangentially related to the war in Ukraine.
(Click on any of the terms to learn more about them and read newsletter issues they're in)
Newly Emerging Terms
- corridors... as in safe corridors or humanitarian corridors, for civilians trying to evacuate Ukraine
- Venezuela... released two jailed Americans this week after negotiations with US officials
- Irpin... the city in Ukraine where a mother and her children were killed as they were trying to flee :(
Biggest Increase in Usage from Previous Week
- orientation (>275%)... mainly related to a bill in Florida seeking to limit/prohibit classroom discussions on sexual orientation or gender identity
- imports (>250%)... various uses, but mostly related to the US passing a bill banning Russian oil imports
- visa (~200%)... Visa and Mastercard both suspended their services in Russia
- gallon (>175%)...lots of discussion about the cost of gas per gallon as it creeps up
- evacuate (>150%)... as in Ukrainians trying to leave their country
Most Used Terms
Covid also remains displaced from the most common words by the war...
Note that these "Most Used" terms tend to be used very broadly, in lots of contexts... vs. the other "Emerging" and "Biggest Usage Increase" terms which are, as you can tell, quite narrow and likely more meaningful/interesting.
