Here's what's trending this week in newsletters...enjoy!

This week over 7500 issues came in…
Now that we're a few weeks into the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we're seeing a diverse set of emerging terms and "biggest increase" terms that no longer relate to the war, although war-related words are hanging on strong in the "most used" category. March Madness was our winner for the most terms (four) popping up across "newly emerging" and  "biggest increase".

(Click on any of the terms to learn more about them and read newsletter issues they're in)

Newly Emerging Terms

  • daylight... as in daylight saving time, which just started in the US-- and lots of discussion around whether it should be permanent.
  • bracket... related to the NCAA's March Madness tournament (if you're curious here are the actual brackets for men's and for women's)
  • clocks...related to the time change last weekend
  • Jussie & Smollett ... Jussie Smollett, alleged to have staged a racist and anti-gay attack on himself, was just released from jail pending his appeal
  • Raskin... as in Sarah Bloom Raskin, who withdrew her nomination to the Federal Reserve
  • portal...many different uses, but a good number relate to the NCAA Transfer Portal (if you have no clue what that is, here's an explanation
  • Yankees... As in the New York Yankees, mainly driven by the vaccine mandate in NYC and the impact on unvaccinated baseball players as the season's opening day approaches
  • portal...many different uses, but a good number relate to the NCAA Transfer Portal (if you have no clue what that is, here's an explanation)

Biggest Increase in Usage from Previous Week

  • madness (~175%)... while there might be a lot of madness going on in the world right now, the usage is driven by the NCAA's March Madness :)
  • NCAA (>150%)... as expected, also related to March Madness
  • ministers (>150%)... lots of uses, including the prime ministers from Poland, the Czech Republic, and Solvenia who visited Kyiv to show their support of Ukraine this week.
  • Bloom (>150%)...as in Sarah Bloom Raskin, see above.
  • Idaho (~150%)... a variety of uses, but some of the more common ones included Idaho's recent anti-abortion legislation and Idaho's Rep Jim Risch who's pushing for Biden to do more to help Ukraine.
  • SXSW (~150%)... South by Southwest (SXSW) conference and festival is in full swing

Most Used Terms

"Russia"/"Russian" dropped off, "Covid" has stayed off (!), and "war" has settled in...

Note that these "Most Used" terms tend to be used very broadly, in lots of contexts... vs. the other "Emerging" and "Biggest Usage Increase" terms which are, as you can tell, quite narrow and likely more meaningful/interesting.
