This week around 7300 issues came in…
We saw a much wider diversification of terms this week than last week, which was dominated by Roe v. Wade and the Supreme Court document leak. This week, terms related to the crypto crash of UST and LUNA had the greatest depth, with six mentions, and then there were a smattering of varied topics from art sales, to the Philippine elections, and more!
(Click on any of the terms to learn more about them and read newsletter issues they're in)
Newly Emerging Terms
- UST... as in the algorithmic stablecoin UST/TerraUSD (meant to hold a 1:1 ratio to the US dollar and mainly backed by the cryptocurrency LUNA), which plummeted in value this week
- LUNA... sister cryptocurrency to UST that has lost 99% of its value this week. Ugh.
- Warhol... Andy Warhol's 1964 painting "Shot Sage Blue Marilyn" (portrait of Marilyn Monroe) sold for a record breaking $195 million, the most ever paid for 20th century art AND US art!
- Abu... a few uses, but mainly driven by 1. Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian-American journalist who was shot and killed this week, and 2. UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan died and will be succeeded by his younger brother Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
- algorithmic...as in algorithmic stablecoins, of which the newly-unpegged UST is one example. If you want to really understand how algorithmic stablecoins work and how UST crashed, Coindesk has a very helpful article.
- dictator... mainly in reference to the election in the Philippines; Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos is projected to win and he is the son of the deceased Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Definitely some mentions of Putin as dictator too.
- Jazeera... as in the news/media conglomerate Al Jazeera, which Shireen Abu Akleh worked for
- crashed... many uses, but driven up by mentions of stock and crypto crashes
- Ferdinand... as in mentions of both Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos and his father Ferdinand Marcos.
Biggest Increase in Usage from Previous Week
- stablecoin (250%)... related to the UST stablecoin unpegging from the US dollar and crashing
- Pulitzer (~225%) Pulitzer Prize winners were announced May 9th
- Marcos (~225%)... see above: dictator and Ferdinand
- suppliers (>200%)... many uses, but some include references to the baby formula shortage, supply chain challenges from China because of suppliers being shut down, and more
- Terra (>175%)... TerraUSD trades with the symbol UST and is often referred to as Terra; see above
- Finland (>175%) ... along with Sweden, Finland is expected to apply to join NATO
- formula (>150%) ... related to the shortage of baby formula in the US
Most Used Terms
Note that these "Most Used" terms tend to be used very broadly, in lots of contexts... vs. the other "Emerging" and "Biggest Usage Increase" terms which are, as you can tell, quite narrow and likely more meaningful/interesting.
