Hello!

Here's what's trending this week in newsletters...enjoy!

This week around 7800 issues came in…
The majority of newly emerging terms and increased-in-usage terms related to shootings in the US (Buffalo grocery store, Laguna Woods church) last weekend. Ugh. On a lighter note, Finland was on the most-increased-from-last-week list two weeks in a row, which is a highly unusual occurrence!

(Click on any of the terms to learn more about them and read newsletter issues they're in)

Newly Emerging Terms

  • supermarket... related the the mass shooting at the supermarket in Buffalo, NY, last weekend
  • gunman... the one who did the mass shooting
  • massacre... as in the horrifying massacre that the mass shooting was
  • supremacist... the shooter was an avowed white supremacist
  • manifesto...prior to the shooting, the gunman posted a 180 page racist manifesto online with details of his plan
  • racially... as in the shooting was racially motivated
  • Laguna... related to yet another shooting last weekend, one that occurred at a church in a Laguna Woods, CA
  • Fetterman... as in John Fetterman, Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania, who just won the Democratic Senate primary
  • Barnette...as in Kathy Barnette who appears to have come in third in Pennsylvania's Republican Senate primary (the actual winner still appears too close to call)

Biggest Increase in Usage from Previous Week

  • shooter (>475) & shootings (>325%)... as expected, related to the shootings in Buffalo and Laguna Woods
  • replacement (>225%)... related to the Buffalo gunman's belief in "replacement theory" (a far-right, racist conspiracy theory falsely alleging white Americans are at risk of being replaced by people of color)
  • motivated (>200%)... as in racially motivated (see above)
  • Finland (~200%) ...  Sweden and Finland formally applied to join NATO on Wednesday

Most Used Terms

Note that these "Most Used" terms tend to be used very broadly, in lots of contexts... vs. the other "Emerging" and "Biggest Usage Increase" terms which are, as you can tell, quite narrow and likely more meaningful/interesting.
