Hello!

Here's what's trending this week in newsletters...enjoy!

This week around 6700 issues came in…
While terms related to the Jan 6th congressional hearings continue to appear, several new terms related to the election in Colombia and events in the music world have popped up!

(Click on any of the terms to learn more about them and read newsletter issues they're in)

Newly Emerging Terms

  • Petro... as in Gustavo Petro, a leftist, who was just elected Colombia's next president
  • Beyoncé... who just released the first track of her upcoming album
  • ethnic... many discussions around ethnic groups and their treatment, in contexts such as Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, the Colombian election, Uyghur surveillance in China, and more
  • Drake... who just dropped a new 14 song album

  • Rusty Bowers... as in Arizona House speaker Rusty Bowers who testified at the January 6th committee hearings this week
  • tuition... the Supreme Court struck down a Maine law and now Maine can no longer deny tuition aid to religious schools

Biggest Increase in Usage from Previous Week

  • Colombia (>250%)... had their elections, with the winner being Gustavo Petro
  • Juneteenth (>175%)... the US federal holiday on June 19th that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans  (it moved from newly emerging last week to biggest increase this week)
  • Gustavo (~175%)... As in Gustavo Petro, see above
  • electors (>125%)... related to the testimony at the January 6th committee hearings of Trump's push for "fake" electors
  • leftist (>125%)... different contexts, but mainly driven by the adjective describing Colombia's newly elected president, Gustavo Petro, who is very leftist and promising sweeping change

Most Used Terms

Note that these "Most Used" terms tend to be used very broadly, in lots of contexts... vs. the other "Emerging" and "Biggest Usage Increase" terms which are, as you can tell, quite narrow and likely more meaningful/interesting.
