Good day!

Normally we handpick newsletter issues by independent writers that provide new or unique perspectives... but our lead researcher/writer is on maternity leave so we are exploring newsletter content that isn't as time-intensive, like trending terms and some specifically-themed newsletters.

Thanks for sticking with us until our normal programming resumes!

(And If someone forwarded you this and you'd like to subscribe, you can do that here -- thanks!)

Here's what's trending this week in newsletters...enjoy!

This week around 8500 issues came in…
The new Omicron covid variant and the abortion discussion in the Supreme Court dominated new and emerging terms this week...
(Click on any of the terms to learn more about them and read newsletter issues they're in)

Newly Emerging Terms

  • Omicron... The new covid variant that was detected
  • Dorsey... as in Jack Dorsey, who just resigned as CEO of Twitter
  • Virgil and Abloh... as in Virgil Abloh, the fashion designer who passed away
  • mutations... related to the covid and the omicron variant
  • Maxwell... as in Ghislaine Maxwell and new testimony related to sexual abuse and Jeffery Epstein

Biggest Increase in Usage from Previous Week

  • variant (>950%), variants (>~400%), detected (>650%)... all related to the new Omicron covid variant that was discovered and is now being found around the globe
  • roe (~650%), wade (>~350%), abortion (~400%), overturn (~300%)... Related to the possibility that the Supreme Court might overturn Roe vs. Wade
  • bans (>550%)... conveniently related to both covid-variant travel bans and bans on abortion
  • shutdown (>400%)...  related to averting another government shutdown

Most Used Terms

"Holiday" and "home" popped up to the top this week and, interestingly, Covid, even with the new variant, dropped off the top set!

Note that these "Most Used" terms tend to be used very broadly, in lots of contexts... vs. the other "Emerging" and "Biggest Usage Increase" terms which are, as you can tell, quite narrow and likely more meaningful/interesting.
