This week over 7800 issues came in…
The holidays and end of year created a spike in terms relevant to those, including several "fluffier" terms (like "merry" from all of the "merry Christmas" wishes to readers) rather than content-based terms. Interestingly, none of the "biggest increases" were over 150%, which means there wasn't any news that skyrocketed up a ton from the previous week (for comparison, the week before, some terms had been up >500%).

Newly Emerging Terms
- closures... discussions around possible closures because of Omicron and weather as well as other closures that happened in 2021
- CES... as in the Consumer Electronics Show which is still planning to happen in-person in Vegas in Jan 2022...
- resolutions... many related to end of year / New Year's resolutions. It's that time of year :)
- solstice... as in the winter solstice on Dec 21st
Biggest Increase in Usage from Previous Week
- merry (~150%)... as in: "Merry Christmas"!
- Joan... (>140%) as in writer Joan Didion who passed away this week at 87
- wishing... (>120%) a common phrase for writers to their readers this time of year, like "wishing you happy holidays"
- Springsteen (>120%) as in Bruce, who sold his music rights to Sony for half a billion dollars. Woah, merry Christmas to him!
Most Used Terms
Covid shot up to the highest rank it's ever been (ugh!), but on the bright side, "holiday" and "Christmas" made their debut in the top terms!
Note that these "Most Used" terms tend to be used very broadly, in lots of contexts... vs. the other "Emerging" and "Biggest Usage Increase" terms which are, as you can tell, quite narrow and likely more meaningful/interesting.
